    The city of Tucumcari hired an Albuquerque-based engineering firm to conduct a preliminary engineering report for future industrial growth. City commissioners voted unanimously to approve an agreement for engineering services with Forsgren Associates, Inc.     A solid waste facility grant from the New Mexico Environmental Department Solid Waste Bureau will help the city close and cap the old landfill. "We are extremely lucky to have received the $133,268 from the solid waste bureau," City Manager Doug Powers said. Powers said there was only $700,000 available from the bureau, which had received more than $3 million worth of request from around the state.     A Tucumcari man pleaded guilty Tuesday in the Tenth Judicial District court to charges connected with a July 2011 beating death. Hendren Dennis Joseph Hendren, 36, pleaded guilty to three of six charges filed in connection to the July 9, 2011, homicide of 33-year-old Shirley Pacheco, and was sentenced to nine years — two suspended.     Quay County residents registered more than 100 animals to take part in the 2012 Dog and Cat Health Fair, scheduled for Aug. 9-11 at the Tucumcari Convention Center. Although 180 animals were registered for the spay and neutering bus, only 105 of those animals will be treated, said Christina Fleming, event coordinator.     A $480,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development will pay for the replacement of water lines, service lines and street paving on several city streets.     The annual State 4-H Horse Show and Rodeo will be held July 27-28 at the Quay County Fairgrounds. There are 37 contestants signed up for each day of the competition, said Tonya Hodges, rodeo secretary.     A wastewater reuse project will create job and research opportunities at the New Mexico State University's Agricultural Science Center at Tucumcari.     Continued renovations and improvements at Tucumcari Municipal Airport will help the area's economic appeal, according to city officials. Recent Federal Aviation Administration grants for $307,800 will be used to overlay the airport's 7,100-foot runway and make any additional repairs, said B.J. Molinas, city grant administrator.
