The Tucumcari Rattlers started the season Friday night with a 35-13 victory over the Raton Tigers at Rattler Stadium. The Rattlers did most of their damage on the ground, rushing 34 times for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Leading the way was Jeffery Cordova with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. The Quay County Commission will vote on a proposed animal ordinance during its regular meeting Sept. 7. The commission meeting has been moved to 9 a.m., Sept 7 from Sept. 10, said County Manger Richard Primrose. Primrose said one of the items which will be on the agenda for that meeting is Ordinance 44, which will outline the county's animal control policy. A Tucumcari man was in jail Monday in connection with a shooting Friday night. William Archuletta remains in QCDC with a bond of $15,500. Police say William "Willie" Archuletta, 20, shot Bryan Cassidy, 30, of Tucumcari in the leg about 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of South Monroe. White said residents have contacted her office about a letter they received, offering a copy of their current property deed or profile by sending them $85. Despite having half the number of its normal competitors, the Tucumcari Senior Olympic team won 16 medals at the State Senior Olympics in Las Cruces. "This year we only had five compete in the state games, and in the past we have had 10 or more seniors attend the event," said Jessica Elebario, director of senior programs at the Tucumcari Senior Citizens Center. The Arch Hurley Conservancy District is continuing to maintain and repair canals in hopes of future water allocations. There has not been a water allocation since 2009, which was only 2 inches out of a possible 42 inches, said manager Franklin McCasland. McCasland said the last time water was allocated the elevation of Conchas Lake was at 4,168 acre feet. After a four year-absence a carnival midway will return for the 2012 Quay County Fair, according to fair officials. "We moved our fair up to accommodate the school system and that created a conflict of scheduling with the Sun Valley rides, midway company," said Brenda Bishop, fair board secretary. City commissioners expressed an interest to have a simpler breakdown of the $15.772 million 2012-2013 budget. The 51st annual state 4-H rodeo and horse show was a success despite a lower number of contestants compared to past years, said Brenda Bishop, Quay County extension agent. Bishop said here were 37 contestants enrolled in the horse show and 40 in the rodeo contest at Quay County Fairgrounds.
