  • Puppet theater group raises awareness for insomnia

    Last week Mesalands Community College had two performances of "Insomnia: A Dark and Stormy Night" by the M. Loren Kahn Puppet and Object Theatre from Albuquerque. The group has performed this show throughout the state, in Europe and in Canada. "Insomnia" is an adult targeted puppet show geared towards the awareness of insomnia. The performance uses humor to illustrate the minds of individuals who suffer from the sleep deprivation disorder.     Mesalands Community College students Shelly Giannino and Alex Nielson have been selected to the 2012 All-State New Mexico Academic Team. This honor recognizes their commit-ment to academic excellence. Each student will receive renewable full-tuition scholarships for up to four consecutive semesters towards a bachelor's degree at a New Mexico public university or college.   • Rodeo team gearing up for spring meets

    Chase Massengill, Mesalands rodeo team member, practices at the rodeo arena as he prepares for another semester. Massengill is currently ranked second in the in the region in steer wrestling and 12th in the team roping header event. The Mesalands Community College's Rodeo Team finished the fall semester strong and has big plans for the spring.     The North American Wind Research and Training Center at Mesalands Community College recently received a 70-kilovolt discharge stick for in-class training from Megger, a Valley Forge, Pa., based manufacturer of electrical testing and measuring equipment. The discharge stick is used to safely remove the static charge from equipment and other voltage retaining components, upon performing maintenance work.     Mesalands Community College was recently awarded the Integrated Basic Education Skills Training grant (I-BEST) sponsored by the Department of Education. The goal of this grant is to help Adult Basic Education (ABE) students succeed in college-level technical programs and complete post-secondary credentials in fields offering good wages and career development.
