The “Western Days” special-event day Saturday at the Tucumcari Historical Museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and it also will serve as a tribute to the man who largely made the museum possible, Herman Moncus. • Commission mum on sixth license

    Ron Warnick|May 22, 2019

The New Mexico Racing Commission didn’t give any signals about how it leaned regarding a sixth license during its latest meeting Thursday, but a key member of a group wanting to build a racetrack and casino in Tucumcari cautioned it is too early to be critical about inactivity on the matter. “There was really no discussion about the racetrack, the sixth license,” said Warren Frost, one of the principals at Coronado Partners that wants to build an $80 million racino in Tucumcari. “As far as the commission giving guidance, they didn’t do that....

  • Quay County experiencing cell tower issues

    Ron Warnick|May 22, 2019

Disabled Tucumcari resident Derrick Matthews endures muscular dystrophy, diabetes and heart problems that require him to make frequent phone calls to set up appointments with Albuquerque doctors and arrange transportation there. Since late April, making those phone calls has proven impossible or time-consuming because the Tucumcari area lost the Sprint cellular signal required to operate both his cellphones. One is a Boost Mobile phone; the other is an Assurance phone. Both require a Sprint...

The new members of the New Mexico Racing Commission held their first meeting Friday and chose officers. The new commission convened a special meeting Friday and had a sixth license on the official agenda, but took no action on that matter after at least two hours in executive session. Now they have a figure for the total number of people who attended this year's festival Friday and Saturday - 3,200. The festival that pays tribute to the early 1960s Clint Eastwood television western shot near Tucumcari has a more solid number on the crowds it draws instead of "guess-timates" of previous years, as festival...

Shane Warner, 42, now of Clovis, in a plea d...

LOGAN — Logan’s baseball team earned a 3-2 district victory Friday against Grady/San Jon’s ace, and it was an eighth-grader who secured it for the Longhorns. Bronchos junior hurler Chisum Rush, who is leading Class 1A in strikeouts, had a largely typical game against Logan — 12 strikeouts, one walk and five hits allowed in six innings. Rush has 87 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings this year and an earned-run average around 2.00. But Logan eighth-grader Park Strong largely matched Rush’s performance on the mound — 12 strikeouts, five walks and five h...

The New Mexico Racing Commission’s ratification Thursday of a proposed settlement clears the way for it possibly awarding a sixth racetrack license during a special meeting on Tuesday — provided the governor doesn’t fire the commission first. The commission, after a closed executive session during its regular meeting Thursday at its office in Albuquerque, approved the agreement with Hidalgo Downs LLC, one of the license applicants from Lordsburg. A settlement was announced in early April between Hidalgo and the New Mexico attorney gener...
