Some people think that life in a small town or in a rural area is rather dull. Well, those people should try to live this live life to learn that it is anything but dull. Instead it is most rewarding! We have but to look outside or answer the phone to have many lively and unique experiences. Last week, for instance, when I walked into KIX on 66 and was seated for morning coffee, I looked up to see a young man approaching the table. As most of you know if you are in my age group, you may have a hard time remembering names even though we usually...
As most of you are all too aware, I spent much of my life in attempting to teach students English. Of course, that included efforts to present literature, to help with composition, and to emphasize grammar. Both the written word and spoken word caused all of us to work hard to be correct as we used them. Since retiring from the classroom, I have relaxed all too much in both areas and have settled into using the colloquial language I learned in my youth. Although I have one small room set aside entirely for my books, almost any room in the house could be called a book room because of the many volumes in each. Yes, I have spent a life time with books and will continue enjoying them by holding them in my hands — not by reading something on an illuminated tablet. The pages and the ink cause much of the pleasure some of us find in reading. Although we were far from being a wealthy family, we were rich in books from the time I c... Full story
Not long ago, a friend asked if I had heard of the poem, "The Barefoot Boy." For once, I was able to say I surely had heard of it and even managed to quote a line. The friend then asked if I might be able to locate a copy, to which I replied I probably could. Of course, I put off that task for an embarrassing amount of time. Finally I went into my book room, sat down, and looked around at the three walls of books. My eye fell on the most logical place to look for that poem by John Greenleaf Whittier — the set of JUNIOR CLASSICS. A LIBRARY F... Full story
