  • God's care for us always brings about good

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|Aug 21, 2012

While on vacation this summer, at a road construction zone in Missouri was a sign saying, "Don't barrel through work zones – MODOT cares." "That's nice," I thought smugly as I drove the reduced speed limit leading a line of antsy drivers. Shortly thereafter was a billboard saying, "New Life Evangelistic Center Cares." The coincidence struck me so I kept reading signs just to see who else cared. I didn't see any more such signs, but that doesn't mean no one else cares. Some people's care seems to do more harm than good. Tongue-in-cheekly, Mark 5...

  • Lauriault:Christians should help guide others to right path

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|Aug 7, 2012

One dark night recently, while traveling north on U.S. 285 where it's divided between Roswell and Vaughn, we noticed another traveler also headed north, but in the southbound lanes. Although that was dangerous, it's understandable how, on an unlighted highway at night, someone unfamiliar with the road could make a left-hand turn into the right-hand lane, which would be his driving lane, if it was a two-lane road. It's coincidental that we were the only car traveling north on that stretch of road, but we were meeting lots of vehicles headed...

  • Lauriault: Life tough without God's wisdom

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|Jul 24, 2012

Some things appear as no-brainers, but they cause considerable confusion. For example, recently at a conference including scientists conducting research on wheat, I learned that the flour of new wheat varieties are evaluated for cookie diameter. Being a connoisseur of fine cookies (but not at all a baker), I asked if the flour's cookie diameter characteristic might determine whether the cookie would stand tall and cakey, like those with macadamia nuts and chunks of white chocolate, or spread thin like gooey chocolate chip cookies. The response...

  • Lauriualt: Christians should be witnesses of Jesus' presence in their lives

    Leonard Lauriault Local columnist|Jul 10, 2012

Here's a riddle for ya (don't worry, I'll give the answer): How can someone run all four red lights in an intersection in one maneuver? Sound impossible? It's not (at least, that's what I think). While on vacation recently in another state, I had missed my destination and needed to turn around when I came upon a secluded intersection with a lot of space. So, I made a U-turn from a green arrow, but by the time I cleared the intersection, I had passed three red lights and my original green arrow had turned red (it was a very short light indeed)....

  • Christians should recognize twisted scripture

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|Jun 26, 2012

I often dress in the dark and determine which side of my T-shirt is the back by feeling for the label. That used to be easy because all T-shirts had a tag in the collar and every little boy knew the back of his pants and shirts by the tag. Now, many times, the labels are printed on and you need a strongly functional sense of touch to feel them. That doesn't bother me much since I didn't get into the habit of wearing a T-shirt as an undershirt because the tag bothered the back of my neck. Anyway, I was dressing recently, but couldn't feel that...

  • Christians should live to lead others to Christ

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|May 1, 2012

Listening to television can be difficult, especially during commercials because I don't hear very well and there's often considerable background 'noise' and rapid scene changes. Recently, while watching a commercial it seemed the product was being advertised as "egofriendly" and I thought to myself, "Now, that's an interesting gimmick. Just go straight to the heart of the matter and cater to our selfish human nature." Catering to our earthly nature can be a problem because we can't do that and please God (Romans 8:5-8; 6:1-5; Galatians 5:24,...

  • Excuses won't expunge sin

    Leonard Lauriault QCS religion columnist|Apr 24, 2012

Children sometimes say the most interesting things. Their excuses/explanations for disobedience (not doing what they've been told or doing what they've been told not to do) can often turn anger into laughter, which can be good, although the disobedience still has to be dealt with (Proverbs 17:22). Sometimes the excuse comes from innocence. For example, it was recently stated at our dinner table, "I can't eat my vegetables because my fork will get dirty." Apparently, the child wanted to save us the trouble of washing another dish. Nice try, but...
