Services: 11 a.m. Saturday a memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Tucumcari. David Saenger, 82, died on Monday, July 9, 2007, in Albuquerque. Mr. Saenger was born in Woodland, Calif., on Oct. 10, 1924 to Carl and Anna Mangold Saenger who immigrated from Germany. His first language was German and his education began with learning English in kindergarten. He attended high school in Woodland, Calif., and in June 1945 graduated with honors from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Science. He married Carolyn Mallory and together they raised four children and were married for 49 years until her death in 1993. Mr. Saenger served as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He attained the rank of lieutenant as a submarine officer on the USS Blenny SS326 during the Korean conflict. He retired from Standard Oil Co. of California in 1977 following 31 years as a research engineer, consultant and international coordinator to affiliated companies in England, France and Brazil. Following retirement, he continued to invest time in his real estate in Calif. Mr. Saenger was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and the Society of Automotive Engineers and Mechanical Engineers. He was a member of the Paradise California Lutheran Church, St. Michael's Episcopal Church and the BPO Elks Lodge 1172 of Tucumcari. He was also an avid supporter of the Helping Hands Hospice since making his home in Tucumcari. Traveling and sailing became a passion later in life and he shared many exciting trips with Muriel Latham-Pfeifer, his wife of the past 12 years. He is survived by his wife Muriel Latham-Pfeifer, formerly of Tucumcari and now of Albuquerque. Threes sons: Eric (Judy) Saenger of Denver, Colo., Carl (Becky) Saenger of Bakersfield, Calif., Paul Saenger of Willits, Calif., one brother Ted (Gayle) Saenger of Alamo, Calif., grandchildren, Timothy, Joshua, Raechel, Amy, Mandy and Mark Saenger, nieces and nephews and other family members. Mr. Saenger was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Saenger, and by his son Christopher. Gay Wellborn will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations may be made to the Tucumcari Helping Hands Hospice in memory of David Saenger.
