A Tucumcari Rattlers golf team member will try Thursday for state qualifying at Roswell.
“The tournament (at New Mexico Military Institute) is called the last chance tournament,” said Golf Coach Daniel Hutchins. “Gabriel will do fine.”
Junior Gabriel Montoya has two of three qualifying legs needed to participate in the state tournament in Socorro. He qualified at the Clovis invitational on April 15 and Bernalillo invitational on March 22.
“I need to qualify this weekend or win district in two weeks,” Montoya said.
This year’s 1A- 3A state tournament is being held at New Mexico Tech at Socorro.
Montoya had a chance to preview the state tournament on Monday during a tournament at Socorro.
“I did not do so well,” Montoya said. “My drives kept fading putting me in the rough and not the fairway. My first drive hit a tree.”
“Gabriel is a great athlete he just needs to relax and play,” Hutchins said.
