Scholarships were awarded to local graduating seniors by Cielo Wind Power of Austin, Texas and businesses that have partnered with Cielo to build wind developments currently under construction.
Seniors Patrick John Wiegel of Tucumcari, Elizabeth Paredez of House Municipal School, Klay Rogers of Logan, Meghan Kline of Melrose and Garrett Foote of Texico were all awarded the 2011 Cielo Wind Power Earth Stewardship Scholarship. Awards will be presented to the students at the Earth Day Wind Ball in Vega, Texas.
Applicants were asked to write an essay describing their responsibility as earth stewards and how they will continue to pursue that responsibility in their education and career plans.
Weigel plans to attend New Mexico State University to study in the field of engineering technology. Paredez will be attending Clovis Community College or Eastern New Mexico University to major in nursing or graphic design. Rogers will be studying wind energy technology at Mesalands Community College, western New Mexico University or Clarendon College. Kline has been accepted to New Mexico State University, the University of New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico University and plans on majoring in photography or criminal justice and forensics. Foote will be attending Connor State College to study animal science and pre-veterinarian medicine.
Cielo Wind Power supports students, education and a cleaner environment by pledging $20,000 in scholarships to school districts throughout Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Cielo is currently in the final stages of constructing two projects, the Lubbock Wind Ranch and Golden Spread Panhandle Wind Ranch, with an additional project scheduled to begin construction later in 2011.
