The Tucumcari Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has been trading flags all over town. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. Visit www.usflag.org for information on proper flag-burning. The old tattered flags that have been traded in are now going to be properly decommissioned in a flag-burning ceremony.
The public is invited to this solemn ceremony on July 4 on the east side of the Tucumcari Fire Station at 123 N. Adams St. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. so the temperature will be cooler. This is a short ceremony with one flag being cut and burned for the public. Other retired flags will be ceremoniously burned as well. You are welcome to stay for this if you wish. Bring your children and let them see how much we respect our flag and instill patriotism in their hearts that will last forever.
Please bring your own chairs if you wish to be seated.
Anyone with flags that need retiring can drop them by Rix Security at 105 S. 1st St. in Tucumcari or bring them to the ceremony and see what a beautiful service this is.
