The Tucumcari Rattlers progress to 3-1 beating the Chaparral Lobos 14-0 Friday night at Anthony. This is the first year the Lobos have had a football team and their stadium has not been built yet. So, even the home team from Chaparral had to make a road trip to Anthony where the game was played on the field at Gadsden High School. The Rattlers made an impressive start in the first two minutes of play with a two-play drive ending with a 49-yard touchdown by sophomore Adrian Prieto. "We scored early off and had a chance to score twice later in the game but turned the ball over," said coach Dub Smith. "The Lobos were a scrappy ball team and they never gave up during the game. We worked on controlling the clock in the fourth quarter and that worked out for us. Our young men rose to the occasion and got some great experience that will prepare us for Loving next week." Late in the first half, the Rattlers were in position to score again but a fumble in the red zone gave the Lobos back the ball. After the Rattlers fumbled a punt, they got the ball back with a minute left in the half. But they could not capitalize on the possession and were 7-0 leading going into the second half. The Rattlers had two fumbles in the first half and the Lobos had one interception. In the first minutes of the second half the Rattlers defense forced the Lobos to punt and eight plays later the Rattlers scored with a 15-yard touchdown run by Prieto – his second of the night. The Rattlers had the chance to score but turned the ball over on downs late in the third quarter. The Rattlers turned the ball over twice on failed fourth down conversions but the defense kept the Lobos offense from converting the turn over into points. The Lobos had 3 interceptions in the game, two in the first half and another in the second, but none resulted in points by the Rattlers. Two of the interceptions were in the second quarter by Rattlers juniors Wesley Martinez and Andre DeBord. The third interception was in the third quarter by sophomore Lucas Benavidez.
