The Dexter Demons stayed undefeated, handing Tucumcari a 32-14 loss Friday night.
The Demons jumped out to a 25-6 lead at the half and won handily despite 18 penalties for 185 yards.
“Dexter is a good ball club and our team did not play well in the first half,” said Rattlers coach Dub Smith. “For a win you need to play four solid quarters of football and that first half was the difference for us in this ball game.”
The most costly penalty went against the Rattlers. Wide receiver senior Michael Fazekas ran down the sidelines and reached out to catch a 14-yard pass from quarterback Andrez Apodaca with less than three minutes to play. As Fazekas hauled it in, the crowd came alive as
Tucumcari kept faint comeback hopes alive. That was soon nullified when Fazekas was called for offensive pass interference.
“I had to shake off the pass interference call,” Fazekas said. “I got back to the line and tried to double what we lost on the next play.”
Rattler receivers coach John Span was upset with the call after the game.
“The official said that Mikey went through his defender to catch that ball,” Span said. “Mikey has as much right to make a play on that ball as the defender does.”
The Rattlers are now 4-3 for the season and prepare for next week’s Homecoming game with the New Mexico Military Institute Colts.
“I tell the guys that we have three seasons in football — the first season, district and playoffs,” Smith said. “NMMI will be a great tune-up game to prepare us for district. As I have said from the beginning of the season, all these non-district games are going to help us for our district competition and into the playoffs.”
