The Clovis High Football Booster Club is planning a tailgate party before Friday’s nationally televised game at Artesia. The game between two of the state’s most storied programs is being broadcast on ESPNU as part of its weekly high school football package. Artesia (5-1) and Clovis (4-3) have combined to win 38 state titles. Clovis Football Booster Club President Mike Mendoza hopes Clovis shows enough support to coax ESPN into considering the Wildcats in next year’s schedule. “What we’re trying to do is show the nation that football is alive and well in eastern New Mexico,” he said. The Clovis-Artesia matchup is the only game on the 14-game schedule ESPN’s Old Spice High School Showcase featuring New Mexico teams. Mendoza said the club will serve about 20 briskets and more than 300 hot dogs and hamburgers at the tailgate party. “We’re going to try to feed every Clovis person that goes down there,” he said. Mendoza said the club has chartered a 50-seat bus and only had 10 seats remaining as of Tuesday. The round-trip ticket for the bus trip is $35. He said the club also rented two school buses and will charge high school students $5 a seat. The Booster Club will leave for Artesia at 8 a.m. and will start the tailgate party at 4 p.m. Information: 769-2277. FAST FACTS * What: Clovis at Artesia * Time: 8 p.m. * When: Friday * On TV: ESPNU
