Artesia rolls in second half against Cats
Published: Friday, October 19th, 2007
Thursday’s boys soccer match between Clovis High and Artesia was a tail of two halves. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Artesia’s half was more productive.
Senior Aaron Ornelas and junior Rodolfo Rodriguez scored less than four minutes apart midway through the second half to give Artesia a 3-1 win at Yucca Complex.
Clovis (5-13) got a goal from junior John Paul Richmond in the 29th minute and carried that lead into halftime behind a solid first half.
The Bulldogs (12-4) tied it barely three minutes into the second half on senior midfielder Anthony Samora’s goal.
“We came out a little flat in the second half, and gave up the momentum,” Clovis coach Shaun Gill said. “They took it and ran with it.”
Bulldogs coach Alfredo Navarrette said his team was happy to be only one goal down at the intermission.
“Clovis came out to play in the first half, and they played really well,” Navarrette said. “I didn’t feel like our intensity was where it needed to be in the first half.”
The tying goal came when Samora chipped in a throw-in to the middle from near the right baseline by Roberto Munoz into the upper right-hand corner of the net. Ornelas then scored on a bicycle kick from inside, also on a Munoz assist before Rodriguez gave the Bulldogs insurance with a header off a corner kick by Samora.
“On offense, we felt we were doing the right things (in the first half); we just needed to finish our shots,” Navarrette said. “I think the first goal was the key to getting us going. Once we got one in, I think it gave us a little bit of confidence.”
Gill was disappointed the Cats didn’t finish more of their early opportunities.
“We outplayed them the first half,” he said. “They came back and just beat us in the second half.”
Clovis ends its season with District 4-5A home matches against Carlsbad on Saturday and Hobbs on Oct. 27.
The Cats routed Artesia 6-1 in the junior varsity preliminary, getting two goals each from Nate Carter and Leonardo Facio and one apiece from Michael Marin and Edgar Montano.
Lady Cats win — At Artesia, freshman Taisha Bosque scored about four minutes in and Clovis High held on for a 1-0 win over Artesia in girls soccer on Thursday.
Bosque punched the ball into the net off an assist from senior Lora Esquivel on a play that started off a corner kick.
The Lady Cats improved to 6-11 for the season with their second win over Artesia this season.
“They have an explosive attack,” CHS girls coach Shane Leatherwood said of the Lady Bulldogs. “They have two explosive players who can change a game, but our defense did a good job of keeping them contained.”
The Lady Cats also won the junior varsity preliminary 6-0, getting two goals each from Airen Martin and Celsey Foster and one apiece from Christa Milner and Desiree Parraz.
