ROSWELL — The Portales Rams’ goal against the New Mexico Military Institute Colts was to get a fresh start as they enter District 4-3A play. They did that and more with a 60-0 win Friday night. “We were playing together tonight,” said junior running back Brandon Adkins. “Tonight we came out ready to play. We were hungry and we played as a team.” Adkins said that his team’s 2-7 record doesn’t give an accurate measure of his team’s talents. He said he feels the team is ready to start setting the record straight. “This is a step in the right direction,” Rams coach Andy Correll said. “It’s a step we have to take to compete in our district.” In the absence of senior quarterback Chris Mosier, who was out with an ankle sprain, backup junior Michael Trujillo led Portales in a relentless ground attack against the Colts. After three consecutive first downs, including a 25-yard run by Ram senior running back Ricky Lovato, Trujillo scored on a 6-yard scamper with 7:05 left in the first quarter. The Ram defense forced multiple turnovers by the Colts and held NMMI without a first down until midway through the third period. Trujillo broke loose for a 60-yard run to the end zone with just over three minutes left in the first quarter but a holding call brought the ball back out to the Colt 17. Two plays later Lovato got the Rams’ second score on a 12-yard run. A Colt fumble at their own 31 early in their next series gave the Rams just enough time to make it 21-0. Trujillo got the score on a slashing cutback run of 31 yards. If the Colts’ will wasn’t broken by the end of the first period, three more Ram touchdowns before the half crushed their hopes. Adkins scored on a 52-yard run, followed by an 11-yard run, then Trujillo hit paydirt again with an 11-yard run of his own. The only bright spot of the night for NMMI was a 28-yard run by junior running back Harvey Johnson in the third quarter for one of two Colts first downs — the other came on a Portales penalty. Portales scored again late in the third with a 55-yard Trujillo to Adkins pass. They added to that in the fourth period with a 37-yard touchdown run by Trujillo and a 45-yard run by sophomore Zach Terry with 3:36 left to play. “I was really proud, we executed at our level,” Correll said. “Not taking anything away from NMMI, (but) I didn’t want us to play down to their level and we didn’t.” Correll said he was pleased with Trujillo’s performance at quarterback during the game and he was happy for the backup to get so many snaps. “He did some good things and he did some things we need to work on,” Correll said of Trujillo. Defensively, Correll said the Rams had a great game. “Against a team like NMMI that runs that quick motion, you have to trust your kids,” he said. “They did a good job of that.”
