HOBBS — The Clovis High cross country teams had a strong day Friday, finishing second in both divisions of the three-school District 4-5A meet.
The Clovis boys narrowly missed taking the team title, finishing with 38 points to 34 for host Hobbs. Carlsbad followed with 50 points.
On the girls side, Carlsbad ran away with team honors, finishing with 27 points. The Lady Wildcats scored 48 points to 51 for Hobbs, beating the Lady Eagles for the first time this season.
“I’m just really happy with the kids,” CHS coach Mark Bussen said. “They competed so hard today.
“For the boys to have their 1 through 5 (runners) within 30 seconds of each other was great.”
Junior Justin Kyle led the Wildcats, finishing fifth in 17 minutes, 3 seconds. Sophomore Seth Zarate came in sixth, junior Justin Netcher was seventh, sophomore Jaron Morgin ninth and sophomore Ben Reed 11th.
Carlsbad’s Nico Barrera was the individual champion with a time of 15:43.
