PECOS, Texas — Freshman Jill Southard led a strong Clovis High effort and the Lady Wildcats tied for the team championship Saturday in the Pecos Invite swimming meet. Clovis tied with Odessa High with 142 points, two ahead of Lubbock Coronado, in a 21-team competition. The top six teams were separated by just 13 points. Southard anchored the Lady Cats’ winning 200-yard medley relay, which finished in a state-qualifying time of 2 minutes, 8.53 seconds. She also led off on the 200 freestyle relay, which turned in a state-qualifying mark of 1:56.06. Individually, she broke the school record by about 16 seconds in placing third at 5:57.53 in the 500-yard freestyle, and added a fourth-place time in the 200 individual medley in 2:35.05. “For Jill, it was a breakout day,” CHS coach Vincent deMaio said. “That’s what set the tone for the girls to win the meet.” Portia Gibbons also had a school-record performance in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:11.64 to finish ninth. Clovis’ boys finished 10th with 61 points. Host Pecos took the boys’ team title with 267 points to 151 for runnerup Lubbock High. DeMaio said the girls had only nine of 16 swimmers available for the weekend event, while the boys brought six of nine to the meet. In addition, CHS did not have anyone entered in Friday’s diving competition. “When you scoring 12 places in a meet and you only have that many swimmers, that’s pretty good,” deMaio said of his squads. “The boys did real well also. It was pretty amazing how well everybody did.” Clovis’ next outing is scheduled for Dec. 1 in the Hobbs Invitational.
