Floyd eliminated in 8-man playoffs

ANIMAS — Second-seeded Animas took advantage of four first-half Floyd turnovers Saturday and beat the Broncos 59-14 in a semifinal game of the state 8-man playoffs.
The Panthers (10-0) will face top-seeded Mountainair (11-0) for the title next weekend.
Floyd coach Rafael Roybal said his team had five turnovers in the game, including four in the first half when the Panthers opened a 30-6 lead. Two of three interceptions came inside the Animas 10, he said, while the lost fumble was inside the Panthers’ 30.
“We pretty much didn’t take care of the ball,” he said.
Jesus Davalos threw for both Floyd TDs, hitting Chet Chenault on a 15-yarder in the first quarter and R.J. Berry on a 15-yarder in the fourth. Davalos ran in a 2-point conversion after the latter TD for the Bronchos (7-4).
Floyd came a long way in its own right this season, upending defending champion Gateway Christian in last week’s quarterfinals. The Broncos won just one game last season.
“Our kids did a real good job,” Roybal said. “Hopefully, it’s a stepping-stone.”
