Clovis leaves tourney with win

ABILENE, Texas — The Clovis High Lady Wildcats escaped the Polk-Key City Tournament with one win, beating Denton (Texas) Guyer 56-51 on Saturday behind a career performance from Jasmine McDonald.
The 6-foot senior poured in 22 points, blocked five shots and was a factor on the boards as the Lady Cats (2-2) won for the first time in three games in this otherwise-all-Texas event.
“It was her best outing in a Lady Wildcat uniform,” CHS girls coach Miles Watters said of McDonald. “She was real aggressive, something we haven’t seen out of her. To play so well at both ends was huge for her.”
The teams battled back and forth for most of the first three quarters, which ended with Guyer clinging to a 34-33 lead. Clovis led by 10 points with about three minutes left before Guyer got close again with several 3-pointers.
Clovis was finally able to break down Guyer’s pressure defense, and layups by sophomore Antiesha Brown and McDonald finally put the game away late.
Brown also reached double figures for Clovis, scoring 11 points.
The Lady Cats probably could have won more comfortably, but managed only 8-of-26 shooting from the free throw line. Watters said they also struggled with turnovers for most of the game.
“They’re a real solid Texas team,” he said. “It was a good win for us. We made the plays late in the game when we had to.”
Clovis was scheduled to return to action next Friday against Portales, but because the school will host the Class 5A state football championship that night the matchup with the Lady Rams has been pushed back a day to Saturday.
A junior varsity game is set for 5:30 p.m., with the varsity contest slated to tip off at 7 p.m.
