Propelled by quickness and jumping ability, Class 5A preseason No. 1 Cibola turned back Class 2A champion Texico 48-24 on Thursday. Pepperdine signee Skye Barnett scored 21 points to pace the Cougars. Cibola coach Lori Stephenson emphasized the ability for the underdog Lady Wolverines (8-1) to pull an upset, according to team members. The Cougars (7-2) pulled away from a three-point second quarter margin with a 14-3 run that lasted into the third period. “I put us in this tournament to play people like this. These girls have to learn they have to do it every single time down the floor,” said Texico coach Keith Durham, whose team was led by Victoria Richards’ seven points. “I just like to play tough people. I like to see how people react when they play tough people.” Highland star shines Barnett wasn’t the only Division I recruit to shine on Thursday. Highland’s Deeva Vaughn, who has committed to play at the Houston, poured in 26 points and led the Hornets to a 57-42 victory over the Lathrop Lady Malamutes — who traveled from Fairbanks, Alaska to be part of the girls tournament. “We came in a bit clueless and I was hoping they wouldn’t really know anything about us either,” Highland coach John Ingram said. “That way, it really allowed Deeva to shine. “She needed a game like this. We’re as good as she is. I’ve got kids that are slowly starting to contribute, but everybody knows we’re only going to go as far as Deeva goes.” Lathrop coach David Stewart said his team had a sketchy scouting report on Vaughn. “We heard a little bit that she was a three-point shooter and she could handle the ball,” he said. “The scouting report we had was that she didn’t like to work down low. But, to me, it seemed like she could work all over the floor.” Here we go again A semifinal game between St. Michael’s and Los Lunas in the boys Milk Cow Classic will be a rematch from a tournament encounter only a couple of weeks ago. In the championship of the Capital City tourney in Santa Fe, St. Mike’s beat the Tigers 48-46 on Dec. 15. “St. Mike’s is always tough. I just think we’ve got to uptempo the contest,” Los Lunas coach Albert Aragon, whose team was led by Matt Billups’ 30 points and 24 more from Kevin Klein in a 75-67 victory over Amarillo Tascosa. “They’re real deliberate and if we play at their tempo, it’s going to be very challenging to beat them.” St. Michael’s, defending Class 3A champs, beat El Paso Chapin 64-54. Although St. Mike’s has won state in each of the past two seasons, it has been knocked out of the opening round at the Clovis tourney each year. — CNJ correspondent Eric Butler
