Wildcats move to 10-0, sweep Amarillo High

AMARILLO — Clovis started off the 2008 portion of its season the same way it started off 2007 — with a win against Amarillo High.
The visiting Wildcats took control early and pulled away late in the fourth quarter to claim a 65-47 victory for a season sweep over the Sandies.
Clovis (10-0) beat Amarillo 67-33 in its season opener three weeks before.
Bryce Hill led all scorers with 18 points and joined Jaden Isler (17 points) and Jaye Crockett (12 points) to post double figures for Clovis, which comes home Saturday afternoon to face Sandia High to open a three-game homestand.
Clovis coach J.D. Isler thought the Sandies’ defensive effort and a hostile road environment helped the Wildcats get ready for a tough matchup with the Matadors.
“It was a good game for us to play,” Isler said. “They put a lot of pressure on our guards and tried to get up into the passing lanes.
“I think it helped our team grow up a little bit.”
Manuel Robles scored eight and Layne Strebeck added six for Clovis, which took a jumped out to a 12-5 first quarter advantage but traded baskets from that point until a few steals keep a late Wildcat run to ice the contest.
“I didn’t feel like the game was getting away from us, but I didn’t think we were in our rhythm offensively,” Isler said. “Our press kicked in when we needed it to.”
