RATON — Senior quarterback Michael Trujillo ran for two touchdowns and passed for four Friday night as the Portales Rams rolled over Raton 64-21.

Portales (3-1), playing its third road game of the season, scored on its first two possessions for a lead it would not relinquish.

“Mike had a good night of passing,” Rams coach Andy Correll said. “His completion ratio was pretty hight, and he spread the ball around tonight.”

Portales forced five Tigers turnovers — four fumbles and an interception — while committing none. It was the teams’ sixth meeting since 2005, and the second time the Rams have come out on top.

“Our defense played extremely well,” Correll said. “We gave away a couple (of Raton touchdowns), but they were on trick plays.

“We pretty much shut down their rushing game.”

Portales opened a 41-14 lead at halftime and was never threatened by the Tigers (2-2).

“It turned into pretty much of a racetrack,” Correll said of the game. “We got a lot of (backups) in in the second half.”

Junior running back Jesus Davalos added a pair of rushing touchdowns for Portales, including one on a 65-yard jaunt in the third quarter.

The Rams return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. game against unbeaten Roswell Goddard at Greyhound Stadium. The Rockets improved to 4-0 on Friday night with a 52-36 pounding of Rio Rancho.
