The Clovis girls soccer team dominated offensively and defensively Saturday, besting Goddard 2-1 at Leon Williams Stadium.
Coach Shane Leatherwood said the defense was fantastic for Clovis (6-6), and the team controlled matters by outshooting the Lady Rockets 15-9.
“I was really pleased. We’ve been working on some stuff in our offense and the girls have been learned quickly.”
Though she didn’t score, Taisha Bosque was highlighted by Leatherwood for eight shots.
“They were just a little bit wide or the keeper made good saves,” Leatherwood said. “We were able to work from the outside and push it to the inside where she made her runs.”
Kyra Bussen opened matters for Clovis with a goal off of a steal in the 27th minute, and Stacy Gross scored 20 minutes later on a penalty kick after Desiree Parraz was pulled down in the box.
Dakota Foreman came within 90 seconds of the shutout, but was called for a penalty after contact with a Goddard player on a rebound.
Natasha Suri scored on the ensuing penalty kick.
The teams face off again Tuesday in Roswell. The junior varsity dropped a 1-0 decision.
Goddard 4, Clovis boys 1
Clovis (4-8) settled for a halftime tie on the strength of a Ricardo Morales goal assisted by Daniel Rojas. But the Rockets put it away after that by taking advantage of Wildcat miscues.
“In the second half, we just fell apart; made some bad decisions,” Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said. “We were outplayed, outhustled today. We got beat to every ball.”
James Masterson, Jared Martin, Juan Gonzales and Antonio Sanchez had the tallies for the Rockets, who visit Leon Williams Stadium Tuesday.
The junior varsity squad was defeated 2-1.
