Clovis Christian is closing in on a District 4-1A volleyball title.

The Lady Eagles avenged a four-game loss at Logan earlier this season by dispatching the Lady Longhorns 25-13, 25-19, 28-26 Thursday night at the CCS gym.

Senior middle blocker Jennifer Schapp compiled 16 kills and four blocks as CCS (11-8, 7-1 district) opened a 1 1/2-game lead over the Lady Longhorns (9-8, 5-2), coached by former CCS coach Ceil Boatman.

Clovis Christian thoroughly dominated the first game, then pulled away late in the second and third sets after Logan made late runs.

“The momentum can shift so quick in volleyball,” said CCS coach Max Kralicek, who took over the team last week after volleyball coach and athletic director Michelle Wallis left for a job with Clovis High School. “When we were up 20-16 in the third game, I really thought it was over.

“We have a tendency to let down; when we do that, we don’t play aggressively.”

Consecutive kills by senior Laken Humble followed by an ace from senior Megan Frost pulled the Lady Longhorns to 20-19 in the third game. Then Logan moved in front twice (25-24 and 26-25) on an ace by Humble and a kill by senior Tiffany Rachor.

Schaap’s kill earned the tying point and a sideout for CCS. Then junior setter Jocelyn Swann delivered her second ace of the match, and Logan had an attack error on match point.

“(We) weren’t on (our) game tonight,” Boatman said. “There’s not a whole lot you can do. We just weren’t mentally ready.”

CCS, on the other hand, was braced for a tough match.

“I think they’re going to be our toughest (competition in the upcoming district tournament),” said Swann, who also had three kills, eight digs and five assists. “We knew we didn’t play good up there. Our goal right now is to try to win every match in three (games).”

Swann admitted she got a litle nervous in the third set.

“We had to work hard that last game,” she said, “but I knew we could pull it out.”

At times, the 6-foot-2 Schaap appeared to intimidate the Lady Longhorns at the net.

“She’s the kind of player that can take over a game,” Kralicek said. “I keep telling the girls, ‘When you have Jennifer on the front line, you have to keep setting her the ball.’

“Right now we’re playing with a lot of confidence, and having a lot of fun.”

Humble had 10 kills, 12 digs and fource aces for the Lady Longhorns, while Rachor had eight kills and seven digs.
