Under the radar: Freshman RB Donovan Johnson (5-5, 120) excels on special teams, especially kickoff coverage where he hurtles his body into the wedge. He also ran for more than 100 yards in a win over Capitan two weeks ago. “He goes 100 mph. I’ve never seen someone get knocked down so much, but he always gets up,” Texico coach Mike Prokop said.
All in the family: Donovan is the third Johnson brother to play for Prokop. Landon Johnson was a tight end on the 2003 title team and Michael Johnson was a lineman on the 2004 title team.

Hagerman at Fort Sumner

Of note: The Bobcats' two losses have been the Texico and Dexter, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in Class 2A.
Keys to the game: The Bobcats — winners of the Class 1A state track title in the spring — are loaded with speed. Sophomore quarterback/wide receiver Issac Bejarano is the top threat.
Go figure: Each team has four shutouts.
Logan at Melrose

Last week: Floyd beat Logan 60-14: Melrose beat Clovis Christian 82-62.
Of note: Logan’s top player — senior wide receiver Taylor Smith — suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.
Under the radar: Junior LB/TE Sammy Lawrence is one of the Buffaloes’ most physical players despite his size (5-8, 160). ‘He’s been doing a tremendous job for us,” Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said.

Clovis Christian at Floyd

Of note: The winner of this game has the inside track on the district’s second playoff spot. The Broncos’ loss is to Gateway Christian.
Keys to the game: Floyd is well-balanced on offense. Siblings Chet Chenault and Chay Chenault are a dangerous pass-catch combo for the Broncos.
Under the radar: Sophomore CB/WR Cory Shipman covers the other team’s top receiver. “He’s so good in press coverage. He’s got good make-up speed and understands the position,” CCS coach Jason Swann said. Shipman (5-6, 130) will see his first action on offense this week after recovering from an injured thumb.

Farwell at Smyer

Of note: Despite its record, Smyer is second in the district in scoring (180 points, a 25.7 average). Conversely, the Bobcats have given up 302 points, more than 43 per game. … At Morton’s request, Farwell’s home game against the Indians next week has been moved up a day to Thursday, Steers coach Mark Anglin said.
Keys to the game: Containing the Bobcats’ running backs, senior Chase Taylor and junior Aaron Martinez. “I’ve told the kids all year that if we can keep people down, we should be able to win,” Anglin said.

Bovina at Claude

Of note: Bovina is seeking a fourth consecutive appearance in the Class 1A playoffs, and may need to win out to do it. … Esau Salcedo booted a pair of field goals last week against Boys Ranch, giving the Mustangs a 13-8 lead in the final quarter.
Keys to the game: In a battle of “Mustangs,” Bovina hopes to take advantage of a struggling Claude contingent. “They have some pretty good athletes, but they’re young,” Bovina coach Hector Guevara said. “We’re not going to go down there and take anybody lightly.”

Childress at Muleshoe

Last week: Childress beat Floydada 24-14; Muleshoe shut out Tulia 58-0.
Of note: The Mules have scored 387 points in seven games, an average of just over 55 per game. They’ve outscored their first two district foes 110-0. … Senior quarterback Wes Wood has thrown for more than 2,400 yards this season for Muleshoe, with 39 touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s had for at least five TDs in every game except one, and in that one he had four. … With each win, the Mules get closer to nailing down a playoff berth. “We’ve got a good team,” coach David Wood said. “We’ve just got to take it one game at a time.”
Keys to the game: The Mules will key on Childress’ running attack, led by 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior Michael Ramirez, who rushed for 156 yards on 22 carries last week against Floydada.
