Floyd at Melrose
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Floyd 7-1 (2-0 8-man District 4), Melrose 8-0 (2-0).
Last meeting: 2007, Melrose won at Floyd 54-6.
Last week: Melrose defeated Logan 82-6; Floyd defeated Clovis Christian 48-6.
Keys to the game: Buffaloes coach Dickie Roybal said his squad will have to handle Floyd’s overall size. “Across the line, they’re bigger than we are,” he said. “We’ll have to change things up a little bit.”
Of note: Melrose has been ranked No. 1 in 8-man for most of the season. Floyd, which has won seven in a row since a 52-8 loss to Gateway Christian on Sept. 5, this week is ranked No. 4.
Quotable: “They’re big and they execute very well. You’ve got to execute perfectly against them.” — Roybal, on the Bronchos.

Estancia at Texico
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Estancia 7-2 (1-1 District 2-2A), Texico 8-0 (2-0).
Last week: Estancia lost to Santa Rosa 55-0; Texico defeated Tucumcari 48-7.
Keys to the game: The Bears are one of a number of primarily passing teams the Wolverines have faced this season. Texico coach Mike Prokop said his team will strive to limit turnovers and maintain ball control.
Of note: Texico beat Santa Rosa 28-14 two weeks ago. … The Wolverines are ranked No. 1 in Class 2A while Estancia is No. 6. … The Bears had scored at least 20 points in all but one game before last week. They have allowed 55 points in each of their losses.
Quotable: “When you play Santa Rosa, you better bring your ‘A’ game. They can score any time.” — Prokop.

Fort Sumner at Mescalero
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Fort Sumner 8-1 (2-0 district 2-1A), Mescalero 0-7 (0-3).
Last meeting: 2007, the Foxes beat Mescalero 55-6.
Last week: Fort Sumner defeated Hagerman 54-7; Mescalero lost to Carrizozo 40-14.
Of note: Fort Sumner has been ranked No. 1 in Class 1A all season. … The Chiefs had scored just 15 points all season prior to last week’s game. … Mescalero is hurting badly in numbers with only 12 players, but Fort Sumner coach Matt Moyer said his Mescalero counterpart, Rodney Wright, wanted to finish the season because of the team’s three seniors.
Quotable: “We’re happy they wanted to (play), so we don’t have two (consecutive) open dates).” — Moyer, whose team almost surely will get one of two first-round byes next week in the six-team 1A playoffs.

Clovis Christian at Logan
When:
7 p.m. today
Records: Clovis Christian 4-4 (0-2 8-man District 4), Logan 5-4 (0-2).
Last meeting: 2007, Logan defeated CCS 52-6.
Last week: Clovis Christian lost at Floyd 48-6; Logan lost at Melrose 82-6.
Of note: Neither team can qualify for the 8-man playoffs. … The Eagles are trying to end a three-game losing streak and earn their first winning record since 2001, when current CCS coach Jason Swann was a junior. … The Longhorns lost senior RB-LB Taylor Smith to a torn MCL early in last week’s game. “They lose a lot of size, speed and leadership (with that injury),” Swann said.
Keys to the game: Success on offense for the Eagles. “Melrose really got on them with their play-action (passing) game,” Swann said.
Quotable: “It’s hard to get a read on them. They passed the ball (against Melrose) a lot more than they have all year.” Swann, on Logan.

Bovina at Vega
When:
6:30 p.m. today
Records: Bovina 4-4 (1-2 District 3-1A), Vega 4-4 (2-1).
Last week: Bovina beat Claude 49-16, Vega beat Boys Ranch 19-14.
Of note: Bovina needs a win to stay in contention for one of the district’s three playoff spots. With a win, Vega will end an 18-year playoff drought.
Keys to the game: Pretty simple. Bovina needs to stop Vega’s power running game. “We’re going to crowd the line and make them throw it to beat us,” Bovina coach Hector Guevara said. Dillam Selman has rushed for 825 yards and four TDs to lead Vega.
Stock rising: Senior DT Robert Knoll (6-0, 205) has stepped up his play in recent weeks. “He’s been a lot more aggressive and fundamentally sound. He’s been making some big plays for us.”
Go figure: Bovina senior QB Jesus Vega has thrown for 13 TDs.
Quotable: “They’re really sound. They’re playing with a lot of momentum because they haven’t been in this situation in a while,” Guevara on Vega.

Muleshoe at Dimmitt
When:
6:30 p.m. today
Records: Muleshoe 8-0 (3-0 District 2-2A), Dimmitt 2-6 (0-3)
Last week: Muleshoe beat Childress 37-7, Dimmitt lost to Tulia 35-34 in overtime
Of note: Ranked No. 4 in 2A, Muleshoe has already clinched a playoff berth. The Mules have a chance to go undefeated during the regular season for the first time coach David Wood’s 11 seasons at the school.
Keys to the game: This game has mismatch written all over it.
Stock rising: Senior WR/DB Nathaniel Chavez is a jack-of-all trades on defense. He’s played cornerback, outside linebacker and safety. He’s also shown the knack for making clutch plays. “He always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He does a good job of coming off his route when Wes (Wood) is scrambling,” Coach Wood said.
Go figure: Muleshoe is averaging 497 yards of offense a game, 220 more than Dimmitt.
Quotable: “Going in we’d like to be a little conservative. We’ve got some kids that are banged up we want to get healthy. At the same time, we’ve got to try and not lose focus and keep things rolling.” — Coach Wood
