GALLUP — Junior Antiesha Brown converted a 3-point play in the final minute and the Clovis High Lady Wildcats claimed third place on Saturday in the Gallup Invitational girls basketball tournament with a 47-45 win over Santa Fe Indian School.

The Lady Wildcats (3-1) trailed 39-33 going into the final period, but outscored the Lady Braves 14-6 in the final stanza.

“We had to fight and scrape,” first-year Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed said. “We got into some foul trouble in the first half, but the second half was better.”

Brown and senior Brittany Johnson scored 14 points each for Clovis, while guard Katharine Cordova came up with five of her nine points in the final period, including a key 3-point play to give the Lady Cats their first lead about midway through the stanza.

In the final minute, sophomore Ashlee Pierson was unable to convert after making a steal, but Brown rebounded the shot, scored and then hit the free throw for a two-point lead. The Lady Braves then worked the ball for a possible tying shot, but ended up settling for a long 3 which banged off the rim and was rebounded by Clovis.

Reed said the Lady Cats emphasized rebounding before the game, and added that Johnson, Brown and Pierson did a good job on the boards.

“Katharine Cordova really stepped up for us in the fourth quarter,” he said.

The Lady Cats return to action on Thursday in the Mel Otero Invite at Rio Rancho.
