ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Wildcats took control with a 19-10 second-quarter and never looked back Thursday with a 77-62 win against Cibola at Albuquerque Academy High School.
Senior post Jaye Crockett had 35 points to lead all scorers, and Bryan Pierson added 16 and Arthur Calbert 14 for the Wildcats, who face Hope Christian in a 5:15 p.m. tournament semifinal today. The Huskies defeated St. Pius 55-44 on Thursday.
Only two others scored for the Wildcats (2-1) — Dexter Correll with nine and Tanner Adams with three — but Clovis coach J.D. Isler said it was a team effort.
“There are guys who didn’t score that much who played really well, Isler said. “Tanner Adams played well. Dustin Williams and Blake Wiley came off the bench and helped us.”
Andrew Apodaca scored 22 to lead the Cougars (4-2), but only Stefan Ford joined him in double figures on the day with 11.
“They’re down a little bit, (but) they’re better than the first two teams we played,” Isler said of Cibola. “They don’t have that big inside presence like they had with (Jonathan) Mader last year.”
Isler said the team will have its hands full today with the Huskies, who don’t play football and have been preparing for the basketball season all year. But the focus, he said, is on the Wildcats.
“We’ve got to continue to play better,” Isler said. “We’re more concerned about ourselves than who we play.”
Senior guard Stefan Mills was out again with a bone bruise. Isler said initially doctors said Mills would be out a month, but a re-evaluation is planned for Monday because Mills said he feels OK.
