CANYON, Texas — J.P. Bullard and Joseph Scott each scored 15 points and Canyon Randall outscored Clovis 26-11 in the third quarter and held on for a 75-64 victory over the Wildcats Monday night.
Jaye Crockett led the Wildcats with 33 points and moved up to 11th place on Clovis’ all-time scoring list with 868 points. Arthur Calbert was Clovis’ only double-figure scorer with 10 points.
The Raiders (11-1) had four players in double figures, with Bret Sheve adding 12 points and Matt Glawe 11. With the loss, Clovis (3-3) has surpassed its loss total from last year’s Class 5A runnerup finish.
Isler said the problem for his team isn’t on offense, but on defense. It showed up during the pivotal third quarter.
“Right now, we have those spurts where we don’t defend very well,” he said. “We seemed to spend the rest of the game trying our hearts out to catch up.”
Isler is continuing to stress leadership from his seniors.
“Somebody has to step up and lead us and take over during those stretches,” Isler said. “Last year we had a lot of leadership on the floor and we could withstand those runs and make runs of our own.”
The Wildcats return home to face Portales tonight, their seventh game in nine days to start the season.
“If Portales comes out ready to play, we’d better match their intensity because we could be in for a dogfight,” Isler said.
