FLOYD — Fort Sumner’s defense was able to hang in there just so long Wednesday night.
When the Vixens continued to have trouble finding the basket, things got away from them in a hurry.
Texico dominated the third quarter 22-5 to break open a relatively close game and the Lady Wolverines went on to a 47-19 rout in a girls quarterfinal game of the EPAC tournament.
In the other quarterfinal matchup, Dora defeated Logan 52-38.
Texico got six early points from a somewhat unexpected source in junior guard Shannon Van Matre — a three-point play in the first quarter and a 3-pointer in the second — and, largely because of that, led 18-10 at halftime.
Then juniors Katlin Luscombe (eight points) and Victoria Richards (seven) took over in the third quarter as the Lady Wolverines (9-1) put the game away.
“We played good defense in the first half, but you’ve got to be able to put the ball in the basket,” said Fort Sumner coach Matt Moyer, whose team managed only eight field goals in the game. “If you don’t, you get worn down real quick.
“We’ve worked on our shooting, but we’re struggling. It’s hard because you just have to play defense over and over and over” with no reward for it.
Texico connected on five 3-pointers and got points from nine players, led by Luscombe and Richards with 10 apiece. Meantime, seniors Bree Lucero and Racheal Chavez and sophomore Sarah Stinnett each scored four points to lead the Vixens (6-5).
“That’s a scrappy team; they got after us hard,” first-year Lady Wolverines coach Ryan Autrey said. “But like we do every game, we just had to be patient offensively until we got decent looks at the basket.”
Autrey said a switch from man-to-man to a matchup zone after halftime helped his team take control.
“They (Vixens) had some good looks, but we did a good job of boxing them out on the boards,” he said.
Dora 52, Logan 38 — The Lady Coyotes (7-1) dominated the middle two quarters to take control against Logan, outscoring the Lady Longhorns 31-12 over that stretch to erase a one-point deficit.
Sisters Kendra Merrick (19 points) and Kelli Merrick (11) led the way for Dora. Senior Tiffany Rachor paced the Lady Longhorns (3-7) with 11 points.
