GALLUP — The Clovis Wildcats are expecting a challenge from their second-round opponent today in the Gallup Invitational. They certainly didn’t get one Wednesday.
The Wildcats allowed just two points in the first quarter and never looked back in a 58-27 thumping of Farmington.
“We jumped on them early,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “The press bothered them and we got going. They played zone, which everybody’s trying to do against us. We had really good ball movement and shot the ball well.”
Jaye Crockett scored a game-high 25 and Arthur Calbert added 10 for Clovis (9-4), who has a semifinal matchup today with Manzano (11-1), winner of six straight.
“It will be an opportunity for us to see exactly where we’re at,” Isler said of the Class 5A top-ranked Monarchs. “They kind of struggled today with Sandia Prep.”
Isler said the Sundevils led 16-10 at halftime before the Monarchs rallied for a 52-42 win.
Acota Luis led the Scorpions (1-9) with six points.
