The Clovis High Lady Wildcats have endured lots of bus trips this season.
So far, they’ve fashioned an 11-4 record, with the only home games in that time coming in the Plateau Holiday Classic, which they won by beating Alamogordo 59-44 in the finals on Dec. 31.
Those two teams get together again in a 6 p.m. tipoff today. It starts a run of eight home games in the final 11 regular-season contests for the Lady Cats, including four in the next eight days.
“We’re really excited to have that many home games (coming up),” junior post Antiesha Brown said. “We really want to go 4-0 this week at home.”
The Lady Cats haven’t played in a week. They are coming off easy wins over Class 2A Clayton and Class 3A Hot Springs in last weekend’s Portales Shootout.
CHS coach Jeff Reed is concerned about his team getting up to game speed again.
“We can’t let anybody sneak up on us,” Reed said. “I’m worried because we haven’t played tough competition in a week and a half, and we haven’t played at all in a week.
“We need to come out (tonight) and have a good start.”
Clovis controlled the earlier meeting against the Lady Tigers (12-4), trailing only briefly at the start and then pulling away with a strong second half. Senior guard Jadee Isler had a season-high 19 points for the Lady Cats in that one, while Brown scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and sophomore Ashlee Pierson added 12 points.
Reed said he expects Alamo to come out with intensity tonight.
“It’s not going to be an easy game,” he said. “Alamogordo is going to want to get some revenge.”
Brown expects to have her hands full with Alamo’s inside tandem of 5-foot-10 senior Samantha Dodson and 6-0 senior Brandi Turner. Dodson led the Lady Tigers with 10 points and Turner added eight in the earlier clash.
Brown said practices this week have been intense with an eye on trying to stay sharp for tougher games ahead.
“Coach Reed has been on us about keeping our edge,” she said. “We’re working hard to try to stay focused. You can tell that the closer we get to these games, the more focused we are.”
