The Logan Longhorns pulled out a last-minute 62-58 victory over the visiting Tucumcari Rattlers on Friday night.
Trailing for all but one minute of the game, the (8-7) Longhorns caught their break when senior Taylor Smith was fouled shooting a lay up.
The (5-10) Rattlers were able to stay atop of the Longhorns with strong play from sophomore Jakus Martinez, who sank 19 points for the Rattlers and senior Curtis Simpson who had 15 points.
"We just had to keep our cool when we were down," Smith said. "We just needed to keep playing our type of game and take care of business and we did.
Smith scored 27 points against the Rattlers. His last 3-point play gave the Longhorns a 57-55, their first lead of the night with 55 seconds left.
Sophomore Brandon Rafool aided in the last minute takeover scoring 16 points, 15 of those points were 3-pointers made in the final four minutes of the game.
"He (Rafool) hit three major shots there at the end," said Rattlers head coach John Span. "The game could have gone either way there at the end. We just could not finish."
Rafool made the final point of the night, which was a free throw that helped to clinch the win for the Longhorns.
"I just kept telling the guys to stay cool and keep playing our game," Longhorns head coach Billy Burns said. "This is a emotional win for us. Being able to come back from trailing most of the game helps my guys to see first hand that it can be done."
The (6-9) Lady Longhorns, however, kept the lead throughout the game for a 79-56 win against the (5-12) Lady Rattlers.
At the start Lady Longhorn senior Megan Frost seemed unstoppable, scoring 31 points with 25 of those in the first half.
"I made some shots that I was just trying to draw a foul on," Frost said. "At any point it can be anyone's game. I would pass the ball to the open player but sometimes it would come right back to me and I'd score."
The Lady Rattlers sophomore Laura Fought scored 12 points, all of which were 3-pointers. She made one in the first and second period and closed out the night with two in the final period.
Fought said that she thought her night was done when she drew her fourth foul, thinking that it was her fifth and final.
"I was so angry with myself, I thought that I had fouled out" Fought said. "It was real physical out there."
Logan boys and girls will play Mosquero at 4 p.m. today at Logan.
The Rattlers will meet the Estancia Bears for Homecoming at 4 p.m. today in the Snake Pit.
