TEXICO — Portales spotted Texico an 11-point halftime lead in the eyes of Rams coach Mark Gallegos.

Portales rallied in the second half, but fell just short in a 36-33 loss Tuesday.

Shaw Carrasco scored 10 points and Billy Good added seven for the rams, who had their six-game win streak snapped in the non-district game.

“We didn’t come out to play in the first half,” Gallegos said of a 23-12 halftime deficit. “I take full credit for that. We really thought we could play them in man-to-man coverage and Texico did a good job of getting the ball on the inside. We weren’t able to pressure them.”

Trailing since early in the first quarter, Portales (16-8) tied the game at 30 on Carrasco’s layup.

Texico regained the lead for good on Seth Bailey’s three-point play. Carrasco’s second 3-pointer of the game pulled the Rams within 34-33 with under a minute to go.

But Brett Anderson hit two free throws and Jose Posada added one free throw as the Wolverines (23-2) to make it 36-33.

Marcus Slocum’s 3-pointer to tie the game with nine seconds left bounced off the left side of the rim.

Bailey led Texico with 15 points and Lucas Walthers added nine points.

Texico coach Richard Luscombe said he liked his team’s effort.

“We had a spot in the third quarter where we had a letdown,” Luscombe said. “Portales is a good team, they got themselves back into the game.”

A 3-pointer by Carrasco and some inside work by Jesus Davalos and Marcus Slocum pulled Portales within 30-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gabby Garcia scored eight of her 10 points in the second half as Portales rallied to beat Texico for the second time this season.

Portales (14-10) outscored Texico 24-15 in the second half.

Post Macy Mitchell led Portales with 14 points and Tara Johnson added nine.

Jaylyn Cooper lead Texico with eight points.

“We didn’t rebound in the second half,” Texico coach Ryan Autrey said. “We let them get too many second and third shot opportunities.”
