LAS CRUCES — The Clovis High softball team was unable to dent the plate Saturday in dropping two games in the 16-team Southern New Mexico Invitational.
The Lady Wildcats (5-8) finished 12th in the event after losing to Onate 8-0 and to Gadsden 3-0 on Saturday.
Onate led 1-0 through four innings, then scored two in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule after six innings. The Lady Cats’ closest scoring opportunity came in the fifth, when Jasiman Dykes was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a single by Cassie Nelson.
Clovis finished with five hits, led by Nicole Anaya and Charlotte Varney with 2-for-3 each, but stranded seven runners.
Gadsden then opened a 3-0 lead through three innings in the final-round matchup and held on for the win. Clovis managed three singles in that one.
“We just need to step up and play the mental part of the game,” CHS coach Brandi Thomas said. “We can’t strand eight baserunners every game, and that’s just about what we did.”
Adrianna Aguilar pitched both games for Clovis.
The Lady Cats return to action April 4 with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Roswell High at Lady Wildcat Complex. Thomas said the team will sponsor a fundraiser that day for the Amerixan Cancer Society.
