The Clovis High girls tennis team swept through Portales’ Bill Wahlman Invitational on Saturday, beating Ruidoso 8-1 in the semifinals and Santa Fe High 7-2 in the championship match.

It was the fifth finish of fourth or better in five tournament outings for the Lady Wildcats, including back-to-back championships.

“My girls are playing good,” Lady Cats coach Billie Merritt said. “The tournaments we’ve been playing have been good for us because we’re seeing a variety of people.”

The Lady Cats, who beat Raton 8-1 on Friday, won 16 of 18 singles matches and seven of nine doubles contests.

Clovis’ boys were slated to play Portales for fifth place, but that match was postponed and has been rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday. The Wildcats lost to Raton and beat Ruidoso in the first two rounds on Friday.
