The Clovis High boys tennis team took two of three doubles matches from Carlsbad and edged the Cavemen 5-4 Thursday in a District 4-5A dual at the CHS courts.
Andy North and Matt Tryan won at No. 1 doubles and Nate Carter and Jacob Carreon were victorious at No. 2 doubles for the Cats, who improved to 1-1 in district matchups and all but ensured a trip to Class 5A state team competition in May. Carter, North and Carreon all won singles contests for Clovis.
On the girls side, the Cavegirls handed Clovis a 7-2 loss. The Lady Wildcats won at No. 4 singles, where Shay Brady defeated Danelle Morrill, and at No. 6 singles with Alex Mendoza getting past Madison Landreth.
On Tuesday, Clovis teams traveled to Hobbs to begin district play. The girls dropped a 5-4 decision to the Lady Eagles while the boys absorbed a 6-3 setback.
The Lady Cats got singles victories from Kalee Haragan at No. 1 and Brady at No. 4, and also won in doubles with Haragan and Brady at No. 1 and Jesenia Velez and Aidoe Rodela at No. 2.
Winners for the boys were Carreon at No. 4 singles, Deven Bhakta at No. 5 singles and Tryan and North at No. 1 doubles.
Clovis finishes its regular season at home against Portales on Tuesday, then travels to Carlsbad for the district tournament on Friday.
