HOBBS — What a difference a few days can make.

Clovis High scored 26 runs in a 16-10, 10-9 District 4-5A sweep of Hobbs at Bell Park on April 14. Saturday, the Eagles were able to shut down the Clovis bats, sweeping a doubleheader 13-1 and 12-0.

That sweep came on the heels of a 7-1, 16-2 drubbing administered to the Eagles (11-13, 2-4 district) at home on Tuesday by Carlsbad, a team the Wildcats split against earlier this month at home.

Josh Parsons pitched a four-hitter in the opener and Kaleb Nelson allowed just two hits in the nightcap for Hobbs, with both games ending after 4 1/2 innings on the 10-run rule. Meantime, the Eagles collected 17 hits, including three home runs.

“Give them credit,” CHS assistant coach Drew Hatley said. “They came out and really hit the ball today, and we didn’t.”

Clovis (12-12, 3-3) jumped in front in the opener when Jordan Hill led off with a single and scored on Emery Sierra’s two-out double. Hobbs tied it in the bottom half, then erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth against Brandon Gilliard and Sierra, highlighted by Frankie Carrillo’s grand slam.

Nelson was in complete control in the second game, allowing only an infield hit by Sebastian Flores in the third and a single by Johnny Garcia in the fifth. He walked none and struck out nine.

Hobbs wasted no time taking control, knocking out Lane Drake in a seven run first. Austin Bertola made it 8-0 with a solo homer in the second, and Bertola’s three-run shot highlighted a four run third.

Bertola went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, including 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

The Cats finish out regular-season play on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Carlsbad.
