The Portales High golf teams head into today’s district meet at Lovington, with state berths already in hand.
“Our goal is to win the district,” girls coach Loy Hampton said. “If the girls play like they did last week we would probably win it.”
Tylar Rowley said she is excited that the district tournament was rescheduled and not canceled.
“Last year we weren’t that great in district,” Rowley said. “This year we have a chance at winning it. All we have to do is beat Texico, who has been our rival throughout the year.”
Rowley added the team has to worry about Lovington, with the homefield advantage.
Rowley has been working on her short game because she said chip shots have given her trouble all season.
“We qualified for state as a team,” Rowley said. “I got a couple of legs myself, but when we first got a leg as a team (at Ruidoso), Amber McCasland, myself and Paige all started jumping up and down.”
Portales boys coach Andy Correll said the Ram boys want to play well and win district, first and foremost.
“Lovington is a good course,” Correll said. “It will be a good tune up for us at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. They usually have their greens pretty fast and Lovington is pretty fast.”
