ALBUQUERQUE — Growing tired of waiting for his team’s offense to start clicking, Texico coach Richard Luscombe turned the Wolverines loose on the bath paths.
Stealing 15 bases in 15 attempts — there is no official state record — the Wolverines ran away for a 9-3 win over McCurdy in a Class 2A-1A state quarterfinal game Tuesday at UNM’s Lobo Field.
The fourth-seeded Wolverines (16-3-1) advance to face top-ranked Eunice (25-2) in one of Friday’s two semifinals.
In addition to the 15 stolen bases, Texico stroked 12 hits in support of senior right-hander Brett Anderson, who went the distance. Anderson (7-1) allowed three hits while striking out seven and walking one.
Junior shortstop Seth Bailey and junior Matt Vasquez led the Wolverines’ attack. Bailey was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, scored three runs and stole five bases. Vasquez was 2-for-4 with a run-scoring triple that capped four-run fourth inning that gave Texico the lead for good.
“We were trying to get in scoring position because we weren’t getting the big hits,” Luscombe said. “We didn’t want to let them hang around because we saw what they did to Mesilla Valley (Monday).”
The No. 12 Bobcats (11-6) pulled No. 5 Mesilla 7-6 Monday.
Luscombe said Anderson had trouble hitting his spots early, giving up single runs to the Bobcats (11-6) in the first, second and fourth innings.
“He threw three of the best innings he’s thrown all year in the final three innings,” Luscombe said. “The first four innings his location wasn’t as sharp as it normally is. He was getting behind in the count and forced to throw strikes.”
Bailey also contributed two stellar plays in the field, ranging far to his left to throw out a McCurdy for the final out of the top fifth inning with Texico clinging to a 4-3 lead.
Bailey and sophomore first baseman Lucas Walthers collected run-scoring singles in the fifth and sixth innings as Texico pulled away.
Notes: Eunice, which owns the most state baseball titles in New Mexico with 15, beat Texico 9-8 and 5-3 in a doubleheader in Eunice in the regular season.
The Wolverines are making their fourth state semifinal appearance since 2005, when they won their only title.
