Portales could never quite get on track at the state golf tournament, as each team finished sixth at the University of New Mexico.
Portales’ girls took 20 strokes off their Monday performance to finish at 926, one shot behind Texico. The Ram boys, meanwhile, shot 342 Monday and 343 Tuesday for a total score of 685.
“We’re all disappointed a little bit. The course didn’t play well at all,” Portales coach Andy Correll said. “I know our guys feel they could have done better, but I’m still proud of each and every one of them.”
St. Michael’s shot a 625 to edge Lovington (630) for the title.
Portales senior Donavin Sanchez, one shot off the lead after Monday, shot a 10-over-par 82 to slide to a three-way tie for sixth place with a two-day total of 156.
But Correll said there were positives. Senior Rick Bergman was consistent over the tournament with a 172 and Tristan Cottrell shaved 10 strokes off his Monday performance. Cottrell shot an 86 on Tuesday, and came inches away from a hole-in-one on the sixth hole with a 6-iron.
“There’s no give up in these guys,” Correll said, “and that’s all we can ask.”
Johnny Duncan of Ruidoso was the medalist with a two-day total of 148, 4 over par.
The Portales girls, meanwhile, were led by Paige Hartman, who shot 223 to tie for 19th.
Socorro was consistent throughout, shooting a 384 Monday and 385 Tuesday for a 769, well ahead of second-place Hot Springs (810).
Jamie Palermo of St. Michael’s claimed medalist honors with a 166.
