The Texico girls golf team had a goal to improve on their first-day learning experience at state.
Mission accomplished.
Texico took 35 strokes off of its Monday performance, posting a 445 for a two-day 925 to finish fifth in seven-team Class 1A-3A golf championships at the University of New Mexico.
Erin Scanlan finished eighth with a score of 201, helping the Wolverines finish a stroke ahead of Portales, which finished sixth.
“Every kid shot better today,” Texico coach Kristen Scanlan said. “We went in trying really hard to do better and have better ball control.”
Allison Myers shot 126 for Texico, knocking 20 strokes off her Monday total, while Holly Harrison was nine better Tuesday with a score of 109.
Socorro was consistent throughout, shooting a 384 Monday and 385 Tuesday for a 769, well ahead of second-place Hot Springs (810).
Jamie Palermo of St. Michael’s claimed medalist honors with a 166.
Coach Scanlan said the UNM course offers much thicker rough and tougher bunkers than anything her team sees in Texico, Portales or Roswell.
“It was a great learning curve,” Scanlan said. “We’re not super young, but we’ve never been here. I think everybody learned a lot.”
Playing individually, Lauren Douma of Clovis Christian was 19th with a two-day total of 223.
