ALBUQUERQUE — Portales’ first day at the state tennis tournament ended up being a short one.
With three singles players and two doubles teams qualified, only No. 1 singles players Shelby Lucero and Walker Partin advanced past the second round of Thursday’s Class 1A-3A individual tennis championships at the Jerry Cline Complex.
“I know my doubles team of (Makynsi) Whited and (Kim) Spotswood played really tough,” Portales coach Sara Bulls said. “The scores sound worse than what they actually did. They went to deuce plenty of times.”
Whited and Spotswood were out after one round, as were Marissa Best in singles and the doubles team of Megan Combs and Stefanie Montoya.
Lucero swept St. Michael’s Amarissa Rogers, and fell in two sets to third-seeded Miranda Garcia of Robertson.
In boys action, Partin defeated Graham Mullins of Santa Fe Prep in two sets, and fell to third-seeded Jake Ordorica of Ruidoso in two.
Portales’ girls move on to the two-day team portion of the tournament starting today at Albuquerque Academy. Bulls figures the losses won’t carry over into Friday.
Portales, seeded fifth, will face Bosque in an 11 a.m. quarterfinal. The winner will face either top-seeded St. Michael’s or District 3 champion Ruidoso.
“They know the rest of the team is counting on them,” she said. “If they lost (today) ... they were only letting themselves down. They have the pressure of knowing every win counts.”
Portales did not qualify for the boys team tournament.
