AMARILLO — The Clovis Lady Wildcats fought off an early challenge on the road, taking Amarillo Palo Duro in a three-game sweep Tuesday night.

Senior Anteisha Brown had 11 kills to lead Clovis (1-0) in the 26-24, 25-13, 25-14 win, but she got help from sophomores Alek Mendoza with eight kills and Paige Gardner and Kirsti Shough with seven apiece.

“I like what we did balance-wise offensively,” Clovis coach Darrel Ray said. “Even though Anteisha’s going to be (the main option), other kids have got to (help) carry us.”

The Lady Cats had trouble early against the Lady Dons, which Ray attributed to having the three sophomores — Mendoza, Shough and Gardner — playing large roles.

“We just need to be able to relax a little more,” Ray said. “That first game was close, and some of our players got a little bit tight. The match flowed better for us (after that).”

Junior setter Carissa Grummer collected 22 assists for Clovis. Junior Felecia Aguilar had 11 digs, while Brown added five.

The Lady Cats will be home for the next three weeks, beginning with their annual invitational tournament Friday and Saturday at Rock Staubus Gym. Tuesday’s road win, Ray said, provided a good start.

“We’ve got lots of little things (to work on), but for our first game we played pretty well,” Ray said. “Our serving and passing went pretty well.”
