Texico (4-0) at Hagerman (3-0)
When: 7 p.m. today
Last week: The Wolverines blanked Clovis’ junior varsity 34-0. The Bobcats beat New Mexico Military Institute 47-13.
Last meeting: 2008, Texico 28-0.
What to expect: With Hagerman, and Gruver’s spread offense next week, the Wolverines expect to face some quick offenses. “They’ve got a lot of speed we’re going to have to contain,” Autrey said of the Bobcats. “We’ve faced that a few times in the last few weeks, especially facing Portales.”
Quotable: “These games right now, win or loss isn’t what I’m concerned about. We just need to get concerned with what we need to do for our three district games.” — Autrey
Fort Sumner (3-1) at Santa Rosa (1-2)
When: 7 p.m. today
Last week: The Foxes beat McCurdy 21-7, while the Lions got their first win of the season, routing Hot Springs 40-0.
Last meeting: 2008, Santa Rosa 7-6. It was Fort Sumner’s only loss en route to a Class 1A four-peat. Santa Rosa’s 19-0 win over the Foxes in 2007 was also Fort Sumner’s only defeat of that campaign.
What to expect: The Lions will rely on a single-wing rushing offense, as they’re still getting acclimated to new coach Mario Trujillo. Moyer told the De Baca County News he saw the Lions in their season opener against Albuquerque Academy, and they were much improved against the Tigers last week.
Melrose (4-0) at Springer (0-3)
When: 7 p.m. today
Last week: The Buffaloes cruised to a 72-0 win over Gateway Christian. The Red Devils lost to Reserve 38-6.
Last meeting: 2008, Melrose 62-0.
What to expect: The visiting Buffaloes should roll over the inexperienced Red Devils if things go as expected. “If we go down there and take care of business, we ought to be OK,” Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said. “They’ve got decent size, but I don’t think they’ve been playing a long time.
Out: The Buffaloes are sitting out tailback Hayden Huber, who hurt his shoulder on a tackle attempt last week. Roybal suspects it’s a deep bone bruise and said holding Huber out is the safe approach.
Foothill (0-3) at Clovis Christian (4-0)
When: 5:30 p.m. today at Yucca field
Last week: The Eagles took an easy 62-26 win over Menaul Saturday. The Falcons took a 48-26 loss at Magdalena Friday.
Last meeting: The teams have never played.
What to expect: The unexpected. The Falcons are made up of kids from a juvenile detention center in Albuquerque, and the team does not publish rosters (or schedules internally) to reduce the possibility of escape attempts.
That leaves a lot of mystery for the Eagles.
“We’re expecting some basic formations,” Clovis Christian coach Jason Swann said. “You can’t really reinvent the wheel. We’re trying to fix our base defense.”
Health woes: Swann said the team made a lot of mistakes against Menaul, but it was the result of playing younger players as the Eagles nurse injuries.
The Eagles are without Mike Root (lost for the season with a collarbone injury), Scott Steeleman (dislocated shoulder), Scott Fly (broken thumb) and Zach Lucero (sprained MCL). Also, Cory Shipman has a lower abdominal strain and is doubtful.
Extra cheerleaders: Swann said he was pleased to find out the Falcons will get a few fans. Youth from the OnEighty spritual group are planning to sit on the Foothill sidelines.
Borger (3-1) at Muleshoe (4-0)
When: 6:30 p.m. (CDT) today
Last week: The Eagles routed Lamesa 47-6. The Mules defeated seventh-ranked Crane 21-7, and jumped from eighth place to fourth in the most recent Associated Press Class 2A poll.
Last meeting: 2008, Muleshoe won 51-7.
What to expect: The game should hinge on how well the Mules can keep tabs on Bulldog signal caller Trent Kirklin. “We’ve got to contain their quarterback,” Muleshoe coach David Wood said of Kirklin. “He’s their leading rusher, and he’s thrown for 700 yards.” Wood said the Bulldogs were 1-3 coming into last year’s game, but believe they can win this season.
Time off: The Mules have a bye next week before an Oct. 9 district battle at Floydada.
Quotable: “It’s always a good feeling to go into a bye week with a win, but it’s not the end of the world either,” Wood said. “Like anybody, you kind of take that first week lightly and get some things healed up. You can’t put too much into it, but at the same time you want to get better.”
Bovina (4-0) at Springlake-Earth (3-1), 6:30 p.m.
When: 6:30 p.m. (CDT) today
Last week: The Mustangs blanked Dimmitt 40-0, while the Wolverines beat Lockney 38-6.
Last meeting: 2008, Bovina edged the Wolverines 40-37.
What to expect: This should be the Mustangs’ biggest test of the pre-district schedule. Junior QB Blake Betz (5-10, 175) is the Wolverines’ best athlete.
Health: Coach Hector Guevara said the Mustangs should have a full roster heading into Friday. “We’re a little banged up; it’s that time of the year,” he said. “But everything’s OK.”
Quotable: “They’re big, fast. They’re probably the best team we’re facing so far this year.” — Guevara, on Springlake-Earth.
Farwell (0-3) at Arbor Christian (2-1)
When: 6:30 p.m. (CDT) today in Amarillo
Last week: The Steers were idle following a 31-28 loss to Bovina. The Lions defeated Morton 36-7.
Last meeting: 2008. Farwell 40, Arbor Christian 20.
What to expect: A lot of Tyler Puschman. The Arbor running back has scored 11 touchdowns and has 366 yards of offense — 222 rushing, 144 receiving — in three games. Farwell coach Mark Anglin said Puschman also plays inside linebacker in the team’s 4-2 defense and is a “jump ball” receiver in the end zone.
Idle time: Anglin said the open week came at a good time, as the Steers could reset. The team has been making the right reads on offense, but small mistakes have been game-changers. As a result, the offense has been simplified in an effort to cut down on mistakes.
Quotable: “We have got to win the turnover battle,” said Anglin, who said he feels confident about Friday. “We’re 0-3, but the last two games we’ve lost are because of turnovers.”
Vaughn (0-3) at Elida (1-2)
4 p.m. today
Last week: Vaughn lost at House 48-12. Elida shut out Walatowa Charter 47-0.
Last meeting: The teams have never played each other.
Notes: Tigers coach Ralph Gawehn said Vaughn will generally try to run the ball to the outside. “I think we’re ready for them,” he said. … The Eagles have been outscored 152-25 through three games.
Magdalena (1-3) at Floyd (2-2)
1 p.m. Saturday
Last week: Floyd beat Valley Christian 32-20. Magdalena beat Foothill 48-26.
Last meeting: 2008, Floyd won 22-15 at Magdalena during the regular season, and again in the playoffs 50-16.
Notes: Broncos coach Rafael Roybal said Magdalena has good size, but is a relatively young squad. “They run the ball about 70 percent of the time,” he said. … The Broncos have won four straight against the Steers, including last year’s playoff tilt. … Despite its win, 16 penalties and several turnovers hurt the Bronchos against Victory Christian, Roybal said.
