DORA — Lake Arthur relied on a strong ground game Saturday and the Panthers rolled to a 100-52 victory over the Dora Coyotes.

Junior Angelo Rivera led the way for the Panthers (5-1), scoring eight touchdowns, many coming on big plays.

Junior Michael Puebla rushed for 120 yards and passed for 61 yards for the Coyotes, who were down 22-0 to the Panthers at the end of the first quarter.

Dora’s first score came on a 61-yard touchdown run by senior Mark Butler.

Dora coach Pablo Pena said it was a learning experience for his still-young squad.

“Its a lopsided win, but they are a good team,” Pena said of Lake Arthur. “I take my hat off to them. They’re number one for a reason. We had a hard time containing the run. No matter what our defense was terrible.”

Dora managed to recover two second-quarter onside kicks, but when the Coyotes went for a third Lake Arthur came up with the ball and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-12.

Puebla ran for a touchdown after a facemask penalty pulled the Coyotes within range, but Rivera broke off a 60-yard TD run to make it 34-19.

Lake Arthur assistant coach Mark Lopez said this is the first time that the team has put up a hundred points since he has been with the school.

“With the intensity we were playing with, it should have (happened earlier),” Lopez said. “We played a good ballclub in Dora.”

Lopez said River’s big game was made possible by the blocks thrown by his teammates, adding that he was able to find holes to run through.

Puebla finished with four touchdowns, while Butler rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Ismail Machado had 55 yards receiving and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Dora will try to bounce back from the loss when it hosts Hondo in a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
