The Portales Lady Rams stayed unbeaten in District 4-3A Thursday night by sweeping past Dexter 25-12, 25-12, 25-23 at the PHS gym.
The Lady Rams (10-6, 3-0 district) cruised through the first two games, but had to fight off the Lady Demons (4-14, 0-4) in the third set.
Portales coach Ruth Chavez said the ladies were tired after fighting with a flu bug the last couple of days.
“I think we kind of clanked around,” Chavez said. “They flu tired and worn down. Not tired from being out of shape, but tired from being sick. We’re a loud team and we were silent.”
“Dexter wasn’t quiet like the team we saw last time. I was glad to come away with a win.”
After being outplayed through the first two sets, the Lady Demons made it tough on Portales. Trailing 22-21, they tied it on a block, then took a one-point lead on a Portales passing error.
The Lady Rams came back to get the final three points, two on Dexter mistakes, to close out the match.
Seniors LeAnne Blaeser and Amanda Marquez combined to for eight aces on Dexter.
“I give it to Portales, they played really well,” Dexter coach Andy Luikens said. “It give our girls props for battling back in the third game and keeping it close. In the past we’ve hung our heads being down two games and for them to battle back in that third game I was happy.”
Portales travels to Ruidoso for another district match on Tuesday.
