LOVINGTON — Senior Jenna Wagner served consecutive aces late in the fourth game Tuesday, helping Portales outlast Lovington 21-25, 25-15, 28-26, 25-23 and clinch a berth in the finals of next week’s District 4-3A tournament.

Portales (12-7, 5-0 district) erased a 24-17 deficit to win the third game, then prevailed in a seesaw fourth set.

“We came back and beat them,” Portales coach Ruth Chavez said. “It was an exciting game. Every other game was a battle.

“It was close again in game four, but Jenna scored the last two points of the game to put Lovington away. She finished pretty strong tonight.”

Chavez said the Lady Rams were solid in erasing seven set points in the third game.

“I thought it was pretty impressive being able to comeback without making any errors,” Chavez said.

The Lady Wildcats (7-13, 3-3) took advantage of Portales errors to build a big lead in the first game, but Portales turned the tables in the second set.

Wagner started in the back court for the Lady Rams since junior Gabby Garcia was nursing a sore shoulder and couldn’t serve.

Portales is at home for the final District 4-3A game with Ruidoso on Saturday at 1 p.m. at PHS gym.
