Neither Farwell nor Bovina had favorable draws in the first round of the Texas Class 1A football playoffs, and both were eliminated Thursday night.

Bovina (8-3), making its fourth playoff appearance in the past five years, fell behind 35-0 at halftiime and absorbed a 63-27 loss at the hands of second-ranked Wellington in a Division I bi-district game at Kimbrough Stadium in Canyon. Meannwhile, Farwell went down to a 48-7 loss at the hands of No. 5 New Deal in Division II at Frenship High School in Wolfforth.

Bovina played creditably in the second half against Wellington, but the Skyrockets (10-0) simply had too big of a cushion.

Desmond Fox rushed for 96 yards for the Mustangs and scored twice — on a 40-yard run in the third quarter and a 71-yard fumble return in the fourth.

Wellington, though, got four first-half touchdowns and a touchdown pass from quarterback Westin Williams. He had runs of 28, 4 and 27 yards for scores, returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Matt Cummings.

The other touchdowns for the Mustangs came on an 18-yard pass from Dorian Vela to Ricardo DeLaRosa and a 2-yard run by Frankie Guevara.

Farwell (5-6) trailed 14-0 late in the half, but couldn’t keep New Deal (11-0) in check after that. Robert Urballe rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns for New Deal, while quarterback Isaac Chavez-Ward threw for a pair of touthdowns.

Farwell’s lone score came early in the final quarter on a 75-yard completion from Landry Actkinson to Colby Read. Actkinson completed 13-of-20 passes for 168 yards.
