Boys
The Texico Wolverines made a quick adjustment from football to the hardwood.
Texico hit 11 3-pointers Tuesday night in beating previously unbeaten Vega 53-38 in their season opener at Texico.
Seth Bailey, who scored a game-high 19 points, and Conner Doolittle each hit a trio of 3-pointers for Texico, which lost in the Class 2A state football semifinals Nov. 21. Texico coach Richard Luscombe said his team has had only three practices.
“Probably the thing that helped us out was a lot of these kids (played) with us during the summer,” Luscombe said. “We shot the ball real well in the first half and played with a lot of confidence. The second half kind of showed our (lack of) conditioning.”
Lucas Walthers added 10 points for the defending Class 2A basketball champs, who won handily despite making 4-of-13 free throw attempts.
Chip Morris scored 18 points for the Longhorns (5-1).
In other games:
• Four players did all the scoring for Elida, but it was enough to get the Tigers past Clovis Christian 50-36 at Elida. Alex Varela scored 19 points and Jordyn Tivis 17 for Elida (1-0), while the Eagles (0-2) got 12 points from Cory Shipman.
n Friona outscored Farwell 22-13 in the second quarter and held on to beat the Steers 44-38 at Farwell. Landry Actkinson tallied 11 points and Josh Olivas 10 for Farwell (3-1)
Girls
Texico’s girls bolted to a 22-5 first-quarter lead and cruised past Vega 57-27. Ten players scored for the Lady Wolverines (1-1), led by sophomore Jordyn Cooper with 11.
“We’re starting to get into shape,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ve got a lot of time to get there.”
Elsewhere:
• Muleshoe posted its first win in eight games, a 63-43 rout of host Springlake-Earth. Junior guard Yvonne Gardea led the Lady Mules with 16 points.
• Elida beat Clovis Christian 57-20 behind 16 points from Reavis Best. Jocelyn Swann accounted for all but three of the points for the Lady Eagles (0-2).
n Farwell improved to 5-1 with a 49-30 rout of Friona, holding the Squaws to two free throws in the opening half. Keegan Langford scored 14 points, Tiffani Jones 13 and Laura Martinez 12 for the Lady Blue.
